Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Overhauls

Understand the damage. Know your options. Plan the repair.

Engine diagnostics, major repairs, and overhaul services for working trucks and fleets.

A Major Engine Repair Deserves a Clear Plan

Your engine is one of the biggest investments in your truck. When wear or internal damage threatens its reliability, the right decision starts with understanding what failed, what can be reused, and what needs to be replaced.

Burnside Truck Service helps owner-operators and fleets evaluate engine repairs and overhauls. We discuss your symptoms, service history, and goals for the truck so the repair plan fits the engine’s condition and the work you need it to do.

An overhaul is more than a parts kit. The condition of the block, crankshaft, cylinder head, and supporting systems helps determine the scope of the job.

When Is It Time to Consider an Overhaul?

These concerns can point to engine wear or internal damage and deserve a proper diagnosis:

  • Increasing oil consumption or excessive crankcase blow-by
  • Low oil pressure or metal found in the oil or filter
  • Loss of compression, hard starting, or persistent loss of power
  • Coolant entering the oil or cylinders
  • Abnormal internal engine noise
  • Damage following overheating or a lubrication failure

These symptoms do not automatically mean the engine needs a complete overhaul. Testing helps distinguish a targeted repair from a larger rebuild or replacement.

What an Engine Overhaul Can Include

The exact work depends on the engine design, inspection findings, and approved estimate. An overhaul may involve:

  • Disassembly and inspection of internal components
  • Evaluation of pistons, rings, cylinder liners or bores, and bearings
  • Inspection of the crankshaft, connecting rods, and block
  • Cylinder-head and valvetrain evaluation
  • Replacement of specified worn parts, seals, and gaskets
  • Review of lubrication and cooling systems that may have contributed to the failure
  • Reassembly, required adjustments, and operating checks

The estimate should identify what is included, what requires further inspection, and any additional work recommended after disassembly.

In-Frame, Out-of-Frame, or Replacement?

In-frame overhaul: some engines can be rebuilt with the block remaining in the truck when their condition and design allow it.

Out-of-frame overhaul: removing the engine provides access for work that cannot be completed adequately in the chassis, including certain block or crankshaft repairs.

Engine replacement: extensive damage or the economics of the job may make a replacement engine worth considering.

Engine condition, parts availability, downtime, the rest of the truck, and your long-term plans all matter. We can discuss which approach is appropriate after evaluating your engine.

Look Beyond the Failed Part

A damaged bearing, piston, or cylinder head tells part of the story. Understanding what caused the damage matters just as much as replacing the component.

Oil supply problems, coolant loss, contamination, overheating, and related system faults can affect the success of a major repair. The repair plan should address the underlying problem as well as the resulting damage.

After the work, follow the break-in and maintenance guidance provided for your engine and repair. Our multi-point inspections and preventative maintenance can help you keep track of developing concerns.

Before You Approve the Work

Bring your truck’s VIN, engine model and serial number if available, mileage, symptoms, fault codes, and recent service history. Tell us about any overheating, low oil pressure, or previous engine repairs.

Discuss the proposed scope, parts choices, estimated timing, possible findings after disassembly, and any applicable warranty terms with our service team. This helps you understand the job before committing to a major repair.
